What is the name of the strait separating Russia’s Chukchi Peninsula from Alaska?

The story behind the answer

The strait separating Russia’s Chukchi Peninsula from Alaska is the Bering Strait.

The Bering Strait connects the Arctic Ocean’s Chukchi Sea with the Pacific Ocean’s Bering Sea. At its narrowest, it is about 85 kilometres wide between Cape Dezhnev in Russia and Cape Prince of Wales in Alaska. The Diomede Islands lie near its centre.

The strait is named after Vitus Bering, a Danish-born explorer who led a Russian expedition through the region in 1728. During periods of lower sea level in the Ice Age, a land region called Beringia connected Siberia and Alaska. Scientists consider this route important in discussions of the peopling of the Americas.

The International Date Line passes between the Diomede Islands, producing a striking time difference despite their close proximity. The area remains significant for Indigenous communities, marine life, climate research, and relations between Russia and the United States.
