What is the name of the strait separating Europe from Africa at Spain and Morocco?

The story behind the answer

The Strait of Gibraltar separates Europe from Africa between Spain and Morocco.

This narrow waterway connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea. At its narrowest point, it is about 14 kilometres wide, with Spain’s southern coast facing Morocco’s northern coast. The British overseas territory of Gibraltar sits on the strait’s northern side and gives the passage its modern name.

The strait is strategically important because ships traveling between the Atlantic and Mediterranean must pass through it. It also forms a major boundary between two continents and an important route for migrating birds and marine animals.

During the Messinian Salinity Crisis, roughly 5.96 to 5.33 million years ago, the connection between the Atlantic and Mediterranean was greatly restricted or closed, causing major changes in the Mediterranean basin. The strait reopened at the start of the Pliocene, allowing Atlantic water to refill the sea.
