What is the name of the strait connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea?
Answer
Strait of Gibraltar
Answer
Strait of Gibraltar
The Strait of Gibraltar connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea.
The strait lies between southern Spain and northern Morocco. At its narrowest point, it is about 14 kilometres wide, making it a crucial geographic link between Europe and Africa. Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory, occupies a prominent position on its northern side.
The strait is also the only natural connection between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Surface water generally flows eastward into the Mediterranean, while denser, saltier Mediterranean water flows westward at depth. This exchange helps maintain the Mediterranean’s circulation and salinity.
In classical geography, the headlands at the entrance were known as the Pillars of Hercules. The western entrance has long been strategically important because ships using routes between the Atlantic and Mediterranean must pass through it. The seabed and surrounding landscape also preserve evidence of ancient changes in sea level and connections between Africa and Europe.
