What is the name of the steep climb near the end of the Boston Marathon?

The story behind the answer

Heartbreak Hill is the steep climb near the end of the Boston Marathon.

The hill is located in Newton, Massachusetts, at approximately mile 20 of the point-to-point course. It is the last of the Newton Hills and is followed by several miles toward the finish on Boylston Street. Although not the longest or steepest hill in the race, its position makes it strategically difficult.

The name became famous after 1936 Boston Marathon winner Johnny Kelley passed Ellison “Tarzan” Brown on the climb. Brown later caught Kelley and won, inspiring the phrase that the hill had broken Kelley’s heart.

Heartbreak Hill is often mistakenly treated as the course’s final climb. In fact, runners still have roughly six miles remaining after reaching its summit, including the demanding effects of accumulated fatigue.
