The bridge opened on 19 March 1932 after nearly a decade of construction. Its main steel arch spans roughly 503 metres, while the summit rises about 134 metres above the harbour. The bridge was designed under the direction of engineer John Bradfield and built by the British firm Dorman Long.

Its broad structure carries road traffic, trains, pedestrians, and bicycles, making it both a transport link and one of Australia’s most recognisable landmarks. The granite-faced pylons at either end are visually prominent, but they are not the main load-bearing part of the arch.

The bridge’s nickname, “the Coathanger,” comes from its distinctive curved profile. The Sydney Opera House is the famous neighbouring landmark, not a bridge, while Anzac Bridge and Gladesville Bridge cross other parts of Sydney’s waterways.
