The stadium was completed in 1934 after plans for a major Olympic complex had been revived from the canceled 1916 Berlin Olympics. It was designed as a monumental venue for athletics and ceremonies and originally held roughly 100,000 spectators. The 1936 opening ceremony took place there on August 1, and the stadium hosted athletics, equestrian events and the football final.

The venue is closely associated with Jesse Owens’s four gold medals, although his victories occurred in the stadium’s athletics program rather than in a separate building.
