What is the name of the spaceship in Ridley Scott's Alien?

The story behind the answer

The spaceship in Ridley Scott’s Alien is named the Nostromo.

The Nostromo is a commercial space tug carrying a mineral-refining platform and a seven-member crew back toward Earth. Its computer, known as Mother, diverts the crew after detecting a transmission from a nearby planetoid. Investigating that signal leads them to a derelict alien spacecraft and the deadly eggs inside it.

The ship’s name comes from Joseph Conrad’s 1904 novel Nostromo. Production designer Ron Cobb developed the vessel as a heavily industrial, working-class spacecraft rather than a sleek futuristic machine. That design helped give Alien its distinctive atmosphere of claustrophobia and corporate exploitation.

Nostromo is often confused with Sulaco, the military transport ship featured in James Cameron’s sequel Aliens. Covenant and Prometheus are also spacecraft names from later entries in the Alien universe, but neither is the ship at the centre of the 1979 film.
