What is the name of the South African gold bullion coin?

The story behind the answer

The South African gold bullion coin is the Krugerrand.

First minted in 1967, the Krugerrand was created to market South African gold to investors worldwide. Its name combines Paul Kruger, whose portrait appears on the obverse, with the rand, South Africa’s currency. The reverse shows a springbok, the country’s national animal.

A one-troy-ounce Krugerrand contains one troy ounce of fine gold, but the coin weighs about 33.93 grams because it is made from 22-karat gold alloyed with copper. That added copper improves durability and gives the coin its distinctive reddish tone. Fractional sizes, including one-half, one-quarter and one-tenth ounce, are also issued.

A common mix-up is confusing the Krugerrand with other national bullion coins. Canada’s is the Gold Maple Leaf, Australia’s was the Nugget, and the United States issues the American Gold Eagle. Unlike many modern bullion coins, the Krugerrand traditionally has no stated face value, though it is legal tender in South Africa based on its gold content.
