The song Aurora sings while gathering berries is “I Wonder.”
On her sixteenth birthday, Aurora is sent into the forest to gather berries while Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather prepare a surprise celebration. As she walks among the trees with her animal friends, she sings “I Wonder,” imagining what it would be like to meet someone special and wondering whether the dream in her heart might come true.
The song is sometimes confused with “Once Upon a Dream,” the romantic duet Aurora later shares with Prince Phillip. Both songs express Aurora’s longing and romantic hopes, but they occur in different parts of the story. “I Wonder” is Aurora’s solo forest song; “Once Upon a Dream” accompanies her first extended encounter with Phillip.
Musically, “I Wonder” is tied to Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s ballet score. George Bruns adapted the third strain of the ballet’s “Garland Waltz” for the song, with lyrics by Ted Sears and Winston Hibler. Mary Costa performed Aurora’s singing voice.
