The second pilot episode of Star Trek: The Original Series was “Where No Man Has Gone Before.”
NBC rejected the first pilot, “The Cage,” as too cerebral and lacking the kind of action executives expected. Rather than abandon the series, the network requested another pilot. Produced in 1965, this story introduced William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk and established a version of the Enterprise crew much closer to the eventual series.
The episode follows the Enterprise after it crosses an energy barrier at the edge of the galaxy. Crew members Gary Mitchell and Elizabeth Dehner develop extraordinary mental powers, making the story both an action adventure and an exploration of unchecked ability and human restraint. Samuel A. Peeples wrote the teleplay, and James Goldstone directed it.
A common mix-up is its broadcast position: “Where No Man Has Gone Before” aired as the third episode in 1966, after “The Man Trap” and “Charlie X.” “The Cage,” starring Christopher Pike, remains the first pilot; this was the second pilot that persuaded NBC to order the series.
