What is the name of the second largest planet?
Answer
Saturn
Answer
Saturn
What is the name of the second largest planet? Saturn is the second-largest planet in the Solar System, after Jupiter.
Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and a gas giant composed primarily of hydrogen and helium. Its average radius is about nine times Earth’s, while its mass is a little more than 95 times Earth’s. Jupiter is larger in both size and mass, so Saturn occupies the second position in the planetary size ranking.
Saturn is best known for its spectacular ring system, which is made largely of water ice mixed with darker dust and rocky material. The rings stretch across a vast region around the planet but are surprisingly thin compared with their width. Saturn also has a remarkable family of moons, including Titan, the Solar System’s second-largest moon and the only moon known to possess a dense, nitrogen-rich atmosphere.
The name Saturn comes from the Roman god of agriculture, equivalent to the Greek god Cronus. A frequent mistake is confusing “second-largest planet” with “second planet from the Sun.” Venus is second from the Sun, but Saturn is second-largest. Saturn’s orbital period is about 29.5 Earth years.
