Answer
Enhanced Fujita scale
Answer
Enhanced Fujita scale
The Enhanced Fujita scale rates tornado damage from EF0 to EF5.
The United States introduced the Enhanced Fujita scale in 2007 to replace the original Fujita scale. It was developed with improved understanding of how different building materials and structures respond to tornado winds. Rather than measuring wind speed directly in most cases, investigators examine damage indicators and estimate the wind range most consistent with that damage.
The ratings run from EF0, for light damage, through EF5, for incredible damage. The scale includes 28 damage indicators, such as one- or two-family homes, schools, hospitals, and transmission towers. Each indicator has degrees of damage that help survey teams make a more consistent assessment.
The scale is often mistaken for a direct wind-speed instrument. It is primarily a damage-based rating system, and a tornado can receive different ratings along its path. The international TORRO scale is another tornado-rating system used mainly in the United Kingdom.
