Pandora is the Saturnian moon discovered in Voyager 1 images in 1980.
Pandora is a small outer shepherd moon of Saturn's narrow F Ring. Voyager 1 images revealed it in October 1980, during the spacecraft's encounter with Saturn. The moon was later named after Pandora, the figure from Greek mythology whose opened container released evils into the world.
Its location gives it a special role in Saturn's ring system. Pandora orbits just outside the F Ring and works with the inner shepherd moon Prometheus to influence the ring's structure. Their gravitational interaction helps confine and shape the narrow ring, although the ring's detailed strands and kinks are dynamically complex.
Pandora should not be confused with Prometheus, another small Saturnian moon and the inner F Ring shepherd. Both names come from Greek mythology, and both were identified around the Voyager era. The moon's designation is also separate from the fictional world Pandora in James Cameron's Avatar.
