What is the name of the satirical musical groups in the Cádiz Carnival? Chirigotas.
The satirical musical groups in the Cádiz Carnival are called chirigotas. These costumed ensembles perform humorous songs about current events, politicians, social habits and everyday life, making satire the central feature of their repertoire.
Cádiz developed a distinctive carnival tradition in which wit, parody and wordplay matter as much as costumes. Chirigotas typically perform short comic couplets as well as longer pieces, including pasodobles and popurrís. Their lyrics are often rewritten or newly composed to comment on news from the preceding year.
Chirigotas are one of several recognized group types in Cádiz. Coros are larger street choirs, usually accompanied by guitars and lutes; comparsas tend to present more polished and often more serious satire; and cuartetos combine comedy, dialogue and staged sketches. Because all of these groups sing, the terms are easy to confuse.
The tradition also exists outside the formal competition. So-called illegal or callejera groups perform in streets and squares without entering the official contest at the Gran Teatro Falla. Chirigotas therefore refers both to a musical form and to the performers who bring it to life.
