Also spelled Buran, Boran was a daughter of the Sasanian king Khosrow II and the Byzantine princess Maria. She came to the throne during a severe succession crisis after years of civil war, palace coups, and military conflict had weakened the empire. Her first reign began in 630, and she later ruled again from about June 631 to June 632, with an interruption between those periods.
Boran attempted to restore stability by appointing officials, promoting justice, rebuilding infrastructure, reducing taxes, and minting coins. Her authority was recognized in several provinces, including Pars, Khuzestan, Media, and Abarshahr. She was the first woman to rule the Sasanian Empire in her own right.
