What is the name of the ruler of Wonderland, besides the Queen of Hearts?

The King of Hearts is the ruler of Wonderland besides the Queen of Hearts in the 1951 Disney film.

He appears during the trial near the end of the story, where the Queen presides over proceedings concerning the alleged theft of her tarts. Although the Queen dominates the courtroom and threatens nearly everyone with execution, the King is present as her husband and royal counterpart. His gentler, more hesitant manner makes him a comic contrast to her explosive authority.

The character comes from Lewis Carroll’s 1865 book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In Carroll’s story, the King participates in the trial and interprets legal procedures in his own confused way. Disney retains that basic role but gives the Queen a much more forceful personality and makes the court sequence one of the film’s climactic episodes.

The King of Hearts is voiced by Dink Trout in the 1951 adaptation. He should not be confused with the White King, who belongs primarily to Through the Looking-Glass and does not serve as the Queen of Hearts’ husband in this film.
