Frodo Baggins is the ring-bearer protagonist of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Frodo inherits the One Ring from his cousin Bilbo and accepts the task of carrying it from the Shire toward Mordor. The Ring must be destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom, the place where Sauron originally forged it.
Frodo’s journey begins as a private escape from danger but becomes part of a larger struggle involving Elves, Men, Dwarves, and other peoples of Middle-earth. Samwise Gamgee accompanies him and remains his closest companion throughout the journey.
Bilbo Baggins is the central hobbit in The Hobbit, so the two names are easily confused. Frodo is also not the Ring’s original creator or its final destroyer; the quest depends on the actions of several characters.
