Pokémon Sun and Moon are set in the Alola region.
Alola is a tropical island region inspired by Hawaii. Its setting differs from earlier Pokémon regions because the story is organized around an island challenge rather than a conventional sequence of Gym Badge victories.
The games were released for Nintendo 3DS in 2016 as the first entries in Pokémon’s seventh generation. They introduced 81 new Pokémon species, Alolan Forms of older Pokémon, Z-Moves, and Ultra Beasts.
Alola is sometimes confused with Kalos, Galar, or Paldea, which belong to other generations. Sun and Moon’s island structure includes Melemele, Akala, Ula’ula, and Poni, along with locations such as the artificial Aether Paradise.
