Singapore’s rapid transit system is called the Mass Rapid Transit, commonly shortened to MRT. It is the city-state’s principal urban rail network and connects the central business district with residential towns, airports and other major destinations.
The first MRT passenger service began on 7 November 1987, when five stations opened on the North–South Line between Yio Chu Kang and Toa Payoh. The initial section was about 6 kilometres long. The network was officially launched in stages as additional stations and East–West Line services opened, allowing the system to become the backbone of Singapore’s public transport.
MRT is the system name, not the name of one operating company. SMRT operates several MRT lines, while SBS Transit operates others. That distinction explains why “SMRT” is a tempting but incorrect answer to this question. LRT refers to Singapore’s separate light rail systems, which serve more localized feeder routes.
Singapore’s rail network also includes newer automated lines and extensions, but the general name MRT remains the standard term used by residents, transport agencies and visitors.
