What is the name of the railroad company fully owned by Berkshire Hathaway?

The story behind the answer

The railroad company fully owned by Berkshire Hathaway is BNSF Railway.

BNSF Railway is a major North American freight railroad headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. Its name comes from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe combination, created through the consolidation of Burlington Northern and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.

Berkshire Hathaway first purchased a minority stake in BNSF’s parent company in 2007. In 2009, Berkshire announced an agreement to acquire the remaining shares, and the transaction closed on February 12, 2010. The purchase made BNSF an indirect wholly owned subsidiary and became Berkshire’s largest acquisition at the time.

BNSF operates one of the largest freight rail networks in the United States, with major routes across the western, midwestern and southern parts of the country. Norfolk Southern, CSX and Union Pacific are separate railroad companies, not Berkshire subsidiaries. Union Pacific is especially easy to confuse with BNSF because both dominate freight transportation in the western United States.
