The Qatari television network that broadcasts news worldwide is Al Jazeera.
Al Jazeera launched from Doha on November 1, 1996, as the first dedicated independent news channel in the Arab world. Its Arabic-language service quickly became known for covering regional politics and international events with a broader scope than many state broadcasters.
The network later expanded internationally. Al Jazeera English began broadcasting in 2006 and now reaches audiences in more than 150 countries, with major broadcast centers in Doha, London, and Washington, D.C. The wider Al Jazeera Media Network also includes Arabic news, documentaries, digital journalism, and live-event channels.
A common mix-up is Qatar Television, or QTV, which is Qatar’s national public broadcaster and carries news, culture, religion, and entertainment. Al Rayyan TV is another Qatari channel, but it is associated more with local cultural and entertainment programming. “Al Jazeera” means “the island” or “the peninsula” in Arabic, a name linked to the Arabian Peninsula.
