What is the main religion in Qatar?

The main religion in Qatar is Islam. It is also the country’s official religion, and Qatar’s Constitution states that Sharia is a main source of legislation.

Islam reached the Qatar Peninsula during the 7th century, when the early Muslim community expanded across eastern Arabia. Qataris are predominantly Sunni Muslims, with the Hanbali legal tradition historically influential in the country. Mosques, daily prayers, Ramadan, Eid celebrations, and other Islamic customs remain important parts of public and cultural life.

Qatar is also home to many expatriate residents, so other faiths—including Hinduism, Christianity, and Buddhism—are practiced by parts of the population. Their presence can make population-based religion figures look different from figures describing Qatari citizens or the state’s official faith.

A common mix-up is confusing “main religion” with “only religion.” Islam is the clear canonical answer because it is both the majority faith among Qataris and the official religion of the state, even though Qatar accommodates religious minorities.
