Hallorann is the head chef at the Overlook Hotel and possesses the same psychic ability as Danny Torrance, known in the novel as “the shining.” He recognizes Danny’s unusual gift when the Torrance family arrives and explains that people with this ability can communicate mentally and perceive supernatural events.

His warning helps Danny understand that the Overlook is dangerous, especially because the hotel’s ghosts and malignant history can exploit psychic sensitivity. Later, while working in Florida, Hallorann receives Danny’s psychic distress call and travels back to the snowbound hotel to help Danny and Wendy.

A major source of confusion comes from the film adaptation. In Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film, Hallorann is killed by Jack Torrance with an axe. In King’s 1977 novel, Hallorann survives the confrontation, escapes with Danny and Wendy, and comforts Danny afterward. The character also appears in later adaptations and King-related stories.
