What is the name of the protagonist in George Orwell's '1984'?

The story behind the answer

The protagonist in George Orwell's '1984' is Winston Smith.

Winston is a 39-year-old member of the Outer Party who lives in Oceania's Airstrip One and works at the Ministry of Truth. His job is to rewrite historical records so that the past matches the Party's changing political claims, giving him firsthand knowledge of how propaganda destroys evidence and memory.

Winston's private rebellion begins when he buys a diary and writes against Big Brother, despite knowing that independent thought is treated as thoughtcrime. His relationship with Julia becomes another act of resistance, and he later believes that O'Brien may represent an underground opposition movement.

The answer is sometimes confused with Julia, Winston's lover; O'Brien, the Party official who interrogates him; or Big Brother, the regime's leader and symbolic figurehead. None is the protagonist. Winston is deliberately portrayed as an ordinary, flawed everyman whose attempt to preserve personal truth is ultimately crushed by the Party.
