Tajiri established Game Freak as a fanzine in Japan before it became a video-game development company. He later conceived Pokémon, drawing inspiration from his childhood interest in collecting insects and exploring nature.

Game Freak developed the original Pokémon games, while Nintendo published them. Ken Sugimori, a close collaborator, provided character and creature artwork, and Creatures Inc. became involved in areas including the trading card game and franchise management.

Tajiri’s collecting concept became the basis for Pokémon’s central gameplay loop: finding creatures, catching them, training them, and trading with other players. Pokémon Red and Green were released in Japan in 1996, turning that idea into a major multimedia franchise.
