The performance powertrain update introduced for the Tesla Model S in 2019 was called Raven.
Tesla began using the Raven powertrain in Model S and Model X Performance vehicles in 2019. The update replaced the earlier front induction motor with a permanent-magnet synchronous-reluctance motor derived from the motor used in the Model 3, while retaining an induction motor at the rear.
The revised drivetrain improved efficiency and helped Tesla increase range without abandoning the high-output dual-motor layout. Raven cars also received related chassis and thermal changes, including adaptive air suspension revisions and improved energy management. Tesla did not generally present Raven as a prominent consumer trim name; it became an enthusiast and media shorthand for the hardware revision.
Raven is distinct from Ludicrous and Plaid. Ludicrous refers primarily to a high-performance acceleration mode and associated performance configuration, while Plaid is a later tri-motor powertrain family introduced with the refreshed Model S in 2021. “Performance” is a vehicle variant designation, not the specific name of the 2019 update.
