The patriotic song traditionally associated with Uruguay’s Independence Day celebrations is the Himno Nacional, Uruguay’s national anthem.
The anthem is officially titled the Himno Nacional de Uruguay. Its lyrics were written by Francisco Acuña de Figueroa, and the music was composed by Francisco José Debali. It was adopted in the nineteenth century and remains a central part of official civic ceremonies.
During national celebrations, including the 25 August Independence Day observance, the anthem may be performed at public ceremonies, schools, and government events. The full work is unusually long compared with many national anthems, so performances often use selected sections.
It is sometimes confused with patriotic songs honoring José Gervasio Artigas, Uruguay’s national hero. Those works are important in Uruguayan culture, but they are not the country’s official national anthem.
