The on-screen dance instructor in Just Dance is called the Coach. The Coach performs each song’s choreography, giving players a visual model to mirror as they dance along.
During a routine, players watch the Coach’s movements while pictograms and silhouettes near the bottom of the screen preview upcoming poses. The game evaluates how closely the player follows the choreography and awards ratings such as “X,” “OK,” and “Great,” along with a running score. Gold Moves challenge players to perform especially important or demanding moves for bonus points.
The Coach is not the same as the player’s avatar. The player is the person dancing in front of the screen, while the Coach is the animated or filmed performer whose routine provides the reference. “Dancer” describes the role, but “Coach” is the series’ established in-game term, making it the canonical quiz answer.
The Coach concept has remained central as the franchise changed platforms and control methods. Depending on the edition, players have used Wii Remotes, Kinect, PlayStation Move, Joy-Cons, or a smartphone controller app while following the Coach’s choreography.
