What is the name of the official building of the U.S. Supreme Court?

The story behind the answer

The official building of the U.S. Supreme Court is the Supreme Court Building.

The building stands at 1 First Street, Northeast, in Washington, D.C., directly east of the U.S. Capitol and near the Library of Congress. It houses the Supreme Court and serves as the workplace of the chief justice and eight associate justices.

The Court previously met in several locations, including the Old Senate Chamber inside the Capitol. A permanent courthouse was proposed in 1912, construction began in 1932, and the building opened in 1935. Architect Cass Gilbert designed it in a Neoclassical style.

A common mix-up is calling it the Capitol Building, because the Supreme Court met inside the Capitol for decades. The building’s west façade carries the motto “Equal Justice Under Law,” while its east façade reads “Justice, the Guardian of Liberty.”
