What is the name of the oceanic point farthest from any land?
Answer
Point Nemo
Answer
Point Nemo
Point Nemo is the oceanic point farthest from any land.
Also called the oceanic pole of inaccessibility, Point Nemo lies in the South Pacific Ocean at approximately 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W. It is about 2,688 kilometres from the nearest land in three directions: Ducie Island, Motu Nui near Easter Island, and Maher Island off Antarctica.
The point was calculated in 1992 by Croatian-Canadian survey engineer Hrvoje Lukatela using geographic computer modelling. It is not an island or a visible marker; it is a defined location in open ocean. Its name refers to Captain Nemo, the fictional submarine commander in Jules Verne’s novels.
Point Nemo is sometimes associated with spacecraft disposal because the surrounding region is remote and has been used as a target area for controlled re-entries. The International Space Station’s future disposal plans have often led to the nickname “spacecraft cemetery,” although the point itself is not a literal cemetery.
