What is the name of the NHRA's on-track safety response team?

The story behind the answer

The NHRA’s on-track safety response team is called the Safety Safari.

The Safety Safari is part of the NHRA’s first-response operation at drag-racing events. Its crew reacts to crashes, fires, fluid spills, and other incidents while working alongside medical personnel and additional emergency responders. The team also helps prepare and maintain the racing surface so cars can run safely and consistently.

The organization began in 1954, when it traveled to events and helped establish tracks, organize races, and educate participants about conducting them. Over time, its role evolved into the specialized emergency and track-support team associated with modern NHRA competition.

The name can cause confusion because “Safari” sounds like a traveling promotional tour, and the group historically did travel extensively. But in an NHRA race context, Safety Safari means the trained safety and track-preparation crew—not a generic group of track marshals, firefighters, or rescuers. Sponsorship names may be added, but the core team name remains Safety Safari.
