The New Year's Eve ball drop venue in New York City is Times Square.
Times Square is a major commercial and entertainment area in Midtown Manhattan, centered around the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue. It was previously known as Longacre Square. The area was renamed Times Square in 1904 after The New York Times moved its headquarters to the newly built Times Building, now known as One Times Square.
The newspaper organized a New Year's celebration there in 1904, and the first ball drop followed in 1907. Although The New York Times later moved away, the name remained. One Times Square continues to serve as the visual focal point for the annual countdown.
Times Square is sometimes called “the crossroads of the world,” a nickname associated with its heavy pedestrian traffic, theaters, advertising screens, and global visibility. The New Year's Eve celebration takes place in a much larger surrounding area, but the ball itself descends from the tower at One Times Square.
