What is the name of the NASA space telescope launched in December 2021 that studies early galaxies and black holes?
Answer
James Webb Space Telescope
Answer
James Webb Space Telescope
The James Webb Space Telescope is the NASA space telescope launched in December 2021 that studies early galaxies and black holes.
Often abbreviated JWST or Webb, it launched on 25 December 2021 aboard an Ariane 5 rocket from French Guiana. It operates near the Sun–Earth L2 point, about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, where its large sunshield helps keep the telescope cold.
Webb observes mainly infrared light. Infrared astronomy allows it to study highly redshifted galaxies from the early universe and to look through some dust that blocks visible light. Its observations also investigate star formation, galaxies, exoplanet atmospheres, and active galactic nuclei powered by supermassive black holes.
Webb did not replace Hubble completely: the two telescopes observe different wavelength ranges and complement one another. Webb’s primary mirror has a diameter of about 6.5 meters.
