What is the name of the narrow waterway separating Spain from Morocco?
Answer
Strait of Gibraltar
Answer
Strait of Gibraltar
The Strait of Gibraltar is the narrow waterway separating Spain from Morocco.
The strait connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea. At its narrowest point, between Punta de Oliveros in Spain and Point Cires in Morocco, it is about 14 kilometres wide. Europe lies to the north and Africa to the south.
The British overseas territory of Gibraltar occupies a strategic position on the northern side of the strait. The waterway has been important for navigation, trade, and military strategy since antiquity because it is the only natural sea passage between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
The ancient Greeks called the two rocky headlands at the entrance the Pillars of Heracles. The strait is also significant for marine life and migration. Its deep waters allow Atlantic and Mediterranean species to mix, while many birds cross the region during seasonal migrations.
