The mountain resort Victor Frankenstein visits in the Alps is Chamonix. In Mary Shelley’s novel, the place is spelled “Chamounix,” an older English rendering of the French town’s name.
Victor travels there after the murder of his young brother William and the execution of Justine Moritz. Seeking relief from grief, he turns toward the Alps, whose immense landscapes briefly restore his sense of wonder. From Chamonix, he climbs toward Montanvert and the nearby Mer de Glace, where the Creature confronts him.
Chamonix lies in the French Alps at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif. During the early nineteenth century it was already becoming known to European travellers for its glaciers and dramatic mountain scenery, though it was not yet the fully developed ski resort associated with the modern town. Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in the massif, not the name of Victor’s resort, while Zermatt and Interlaken are Swiss destinations that do not fit the episode.
