Michael Jordan played for the Birmingham Barons, a Double-A minor-league affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. He joined the team in 1994 while pursuing his longtime dream of playing professional baseball.

Jordan had stepped away from basketball after the 1992–93 NBA season, partly following the death of his father, James Jordan. He signed with the White Sox organization and attended spring training before being assigned to Birmingham, Alabama. The Barons played in the Southern League and gave him his most substantial professional baseball experience.

In 127 games, Jordan batted .202 with three home runs, 51 runs batted in, and 30 stolen bases. His baseball experiment ended when he returned to the NBA and rejoined the Bulls in March 1995.
