What is the name of the Met's rooftop garden?
Answer
Cantor Roof Garden
Answer
Cantor Roof Garden
The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s rooftop garden is called the Cantor Roof Garden.
Its full formal name is the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden, honoring philanthropists Iris and B. Gerald Cantor. The seasonal outdoor space opened to the public in 1987 and occupies the museum’s upper levels, overlooking Central Park and the Manhattan skyline.
The garden is especially known for temporary, large-scale installations commissioned from contemporary artists. The Roof Garden Commission series began in 2013, building on an earlier tradition of presenting sculpture and site-specific projects above the museum. Artists featured there have included Andy Goldsworthy, Jeff Koons, Cai Guo-Qiang, and Alex Da Corte.
A common mix-up is confusing it with the Met’s indoor courtyards, such as the Astor Court, or with The Cloisters Garden, which belongs to the Met’s separate northern Manhattan location. “Cantor Roof Garden” is the standard shortened name used by the museum and visitors.
