The McDonald’s burger made with two beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions is the Big Mac.
McDonald’s introduced the Big Mac in 1967 at a franchise in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. Franchisee Jim Delligatti is generally credited with creating it, and the sandwich became a nationwide menu item in 1968.
Its distinctive construction uses a three-part sesame-seed bun, with an additional middle bun layer between the two patties. The familiar sauce is often compared with Thousand Island dressing, although McDonald’s treats its exact formula as proprietary.
The Big Mac became one of the company’s most recognizable products and inspired the Big Mac Index, an informal economic comparison published by The Economist from 1986. That index uses the burger’s prices in different countries to illustrate purchasing-power differences.
