What is the name of the mascot for the 2018 Winter Olympics?

The story behind the answer

The mascot for the 2018 Winter Olympics was Soohorang.

Soohorang was a white tiger, an animal closely connected with Korean culture, folklore, and the symbolism of strength and protection. The PyeongChang Winter Olympics took place in South Korea from February 9 to 25, 2018, and Soohorang became one of the event’s most recognizable public symbols.

The name combines “Sooho,” meaning protection in Korean, with “Rang,” which refers to tiger and also connects to “Arirang,” a traditional Korean folk song associated with Gangwon Province. The mascot was intended to represent protection for athletes, spectators, and participants.

Soohorang is sometimes confused with Bandabi, the mascot of the 2018 Winter Paralympics. Bandabi was an Asiatic black bear and represented courage and strong will. Both mascots were unveiled on June 2, 2016, but only Soohorang represented the Olympic Games themselves.
