What is the name of the Martian in Robert A. Heinlein's 'Stranger in a Strange Land'?

The story behind the answer

The Martian in Robert A. Heinlein’s “Stranger in a Strange Land” is Valentine Michael Smith.

Smith is human by birth but is raised by Martians after becoming the sole survivor connected with an early Mars expedition. He reaches Earth as a young adult, having no experience of human society, language, customs, or institutions. His outsider’s perspective drives the novel’s exploration of religion, law, sexuality, property, and social norms.

After arriving on Earth, Smith is treated as both a legal problem and a scientific curiosity. Journalist Ben Caxton and the writer, physician, and lawyer Jubal Harshaw become important figures in helping him understand human life. Smith later becomes known informally as “Mike,” but that is a nickname rather than his full canonical name.

The novel was published in 1961 and won the 1962 Hugo Award for Best Novel. A common mistake is to answer “Mike,” because characters frequently use it, or “Jubal Harshaw,” who is an influential human character. Neither is Smith’s formal name.
