What is the name of the magical sport J.K. Rowling invented for the Harry Potter series?

The story behind the answer

The magical sport J.K. Rowling invented for the Harry Potter series is Quidditch.

Quidditch is played by two teams of seven players who fly on broomsticks. Players score with the Quaffle by throwing it through one of three opposing hoops, while Beaters use Bludgers to disrupt play. Each team also has a Seeker who tries to catch the Golden Snitch.

Catching the Snitch usually ends the match and awards 150 points, although the team with the most points wins. This means a team can catch the Snitch and still lose. Rowling developed the game as part of the fictional culture of Hogwarts and included its rules, rivalries, and famous players throughout the books.

The name Quidditch is derived from Rowling’s fictional location of Queerditch Marsh, where an early version of the game was played. Real-world adaptations have included broomless versions, often called Muggle Quidditch and later quadball.
