What is the name of the longest railway tunnel on Japan’s Tokaido Shinkansen?
Answer
Shin-Tanna Tunnel
Answer
Shin-Tanna Tunnel
The Shin-Tanna Tunnel is the longest railway tunnel on Japan’s Tokaido Shinkansen.
The tunnel passes through the mountainous area between Mishima and Atami in Shizuoka Prefecture. It was built for the Tokaido Shinkansen, Japan’s first high-speed line, which opened in 1964.
Its construction presented difficult geological and engineering challenges. The tunnel is approximately 7.8 kilometres long and was designed for the high-speed railway’s demanding operating conditions.
The name can be confused with Shin-Kanmon Tunnel on the Sanyo Shinkansen and Seikan Tunnel beneath the Tsugaru Strait. Those are different tunnels on different routes, while Shin-Tanna belongs to the Tokaido corridor.
