The London landmark whose clock tower features in New Year's Eve broadcasts is Elizabeth Tower.
Elizabeth Tower stands at the north end of the Palace of Westminster. Its great bell is officially called Big Ben, although the nickname is often incorrectly applied to the entire tower. The tower itself was originally known as the Clock Tower and was renamed in 2012 in honor of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee.
At midnight, television and radio coverage often uses the tower's clock and bell as a symbol of London's arrival in the new year. The tower's illuminated clock faces make it especially recognizable in countdown imagery.
The tower was designed by Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin as part of the rebuilding of Westminster after the 1834 fire. The clock began operating in 1859. Big Ben therefore refers most precisely to the Great Bell, while Elizabeth Tower is the name of the structure containing the clock and bell.
