What is the name of the largest impact basin on Mars?

The story behind the answer

What is the name of the largest impact basin on Mars? The largest recognized impact basin on Mars is Utopia Planitia.

The Utopia basin lies in Mars’s northern lowlands and is approximately 3,300 kilometers across, although its boundaries are partly obscured by later deposits. Its plain is known as Utopia Planitia.

Because the basin is heavily buried and less visually obvious than Hellas, some references describe Hellas as the largest clearly exposed or unambiguous impact structure. Hellas is therefore a common alternative answer in general-audience materials.

For the wording “largest impact basin,” however, Utopia is the canonical choice among the listed options. Utopia Planitia also contains extensive subsurface water ice and was the landing region for Viking 2 and China’s Zhurong rover.

Mars may also contain an even larger Borealis basin, but its status as an impact basin remains debated. That uncertainty does not change Utopia’s standard classification as the largest recognized basin.
