What is the name of the Korean traditional game played during Seollal?

The story behind the answer

The Korean traditional game played during Seollal is Yut Nori, also written Yutnori or Yunnori.

Yut Nori is a board game in which players or teams throw four specially shaped wooden sticks. The combination of flat and rounded sides determines how many spaces a token, called a mal, may move. The named results are do, gae, geol, yut and mo, worth one through five spaces respectively. A yut or mo may grant another throw, depending on the rules being used.

Players race their pieces around a board, can combine pieces from their team and may send an opponent’s piece back to the start by landing on it. The first team to move all four pieces around the course wins. The game’s group format makes it particularly suited to family gatherings.

Yut Nori is strongly associated with Seollal, the Korean Lunar New Year, and is also played around Jeongwol Daeboreum, the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. Its history is often linked to older divination and agricultural traditions, not merely casual board-game entertainment.
