The Korean celebration that coincides with Chinese New Year is Seollal.
Seollal is Korea’s traditional Lunar New Year and marks the first day of the Korean lunisolar calendar. It is observed in South Korea, North Korea, and Korean communities worldwide, usually on the same date as Chinese New Year because the calendars are closely related.
The holiday centers on family reunions, respect for elders, ancestral rites, traditional foods, and folk games. A famous custom is sebae, a formal bow that younger family members offer to elders; they may receive lucky money and words of blessing in return. Tteokguk, a rice-cake soup, is also strongly associated with the celebration.
Seollal is not simply another name for Chinese New Year: the festivals share calendar origins but have distinct Korean customs and meanings. Chuseok, by contrast, is Korea’s autumn harvest holiday, while Tết is Vietnam’s Lunar New Year and Songkran is Thailand’s traditional New Year.
