Janaka
Answer
Janaka
What is the name of the king of Mithila? The king of Mithila in the Ramayana is Janaka.
Janaka is chiefly identified as the ruler of Videha, whose capital was Mithila. In many retellings, “Janaka” functions not only as a personal name but also as a dynastic title used by successive kings of Videha. The particular Janaka connected with Rama’s story is often called Sīradhvaja Janaka.
He is best known as Sita’s adoptive father. According to the epic tradition, Janaka found Sita while ploughing a consecrated field and accepted her as his daughter. He later organized the svayamvara in which Rama lifted and broke the great bow of Shiva, winning Sita’s hand in marriage.
Janaka is also portrayed as a philosopher-king devoted to wisdom and detachment. Ancient philosophical texts mention a King Janaka of Videha as a patron of learned teachers, though epic and historical traditions are not identical. Ravana, Sugriva, and Dasharatha are different figures, not the king of Mithila.
