What is the name of the Japanese god of thunder and lightning?

The story behind the answer

The Japanese god of thunder and lightning is Raijin.

Raijin, also called Raiden or Kaminari-sama in some contexts, is a powerful kami associated with thunder, lightning, and storms. Japanese art commonly portrays him as a fierce oni-like figure surrounded by taiko drums. He beats those drums with hammers, creating the sound of thunder.

Raijin is especially famous as the companion and counterpart of Fūjin, the wind god. The two are frequently shown together in temple gates, paintings, screens, and sculptures. Their pairing reflects the destructive and life-giving forces of storms: wind and lightning can threaten communities, but rain also supports agriculture.

Raijin should not be confused with Susanoo. Susanoo is a major storm-associated Shinto deity with a much broader mythological role, including the slaying of Yamata no Orochi. Takemikazuchi is also linked with thunder, but he is chiefly known as a martial deity and god of swords.

Folklore sometimes gives Raijin a mischievous side. A traditional warning tells children to cover their navels during thunderstorms so that Raijin will not steal or eat them.
