What is the name of the island where the Statue of Liberty stands?

The story behind the answer

The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island.

Liberty Island is in Upper New York Bay, just south of Ellis Island and within New York Harbor. The island is federally owned and forms part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument, which also includes Ellis Island and its historic immigration facilities.

The island was long known as Bedloe’s Island. Congress officially changed its name to Liberty Island in 1956, reflecting the international identity of the monument that had stood there since 1886. The statue itself is part of New York City’s borough of Manhattan, although the island is surrounded by waters associated with Jersey City, New Jersey.

Ellis Island is the most frequent mix-up. It is nearby and is strongly associated with immigrant arrivals, but it is not the island where the statue stands. Governors Island is also in New York Harbor, but it lies north of Liberty Island and has no Statue of Liberty.
