What is the name of the island of the Phaeacians?
Answer
Scheria
Answer
Scheria
The island of the Phaeacians is called Scheria. In Homer's Odyssey, Scheria is the home of a seafaring people renowned for their ships, wealth, hospitality, and unusual ability to travel swiftly across the sea.
Odysseus reaches Scheria after surviving the wreck of his raft near Ogygia. The princess Nausicaa discovers him on the shore and directs him to the palace of her parents, King Alcinous and Queen Arete. There, the Phaeacians welcome the exhausted stranger, hold feasts and athletic games, and listen as he recounts the adventures that delayed his return from Troy.
Alcinous eventually orders the Phaeacians to carry Odysseus safely to Ithaca while he sleeps. Scheria is often confused with Ithaca because both islands are linked to Odysseus's homecoming, but Ithaca is his destination, not the Phaeacians' island. Ogygia is also different: it is Calypso's island, where Odysseus spends seven years.
